Why do you need a Spanish Death Certificate?

To conduct any formal procedures or deal with a deceased persons estate it is required that you have the original or certified copy of the death certificate.

In Spain you can apply for what is known as a literal copy of the death certificate, this gives you all the information regarding the identity and circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased. Apart from the original this is the copy which will be accepted when trying to obtain information regarding the existence of a Will and when it comes to submitting for probate.

Types of Spanish Death Certificates

Original

The funeral director will arrange for the registration of the death with the local Spanish civil registry, who will issue a death certificate.

Literal

It is a literal copy of the death registration, containing all the data related to the identity of the deceased and the fact of death.

Extract

It is a summary of the information related to the fact of death that is recorded in the Civil Registry.

Bilingual

Bilingual: Whenever an extract certificate is requested in an Autonomous Community that has its own official language, it will be issued in Spanish and in the official language of the Autonomous Community in which it is issued.

International

It is intended to take effect in the countries that have ratified the Vienna Convention of September 8, 1976. This certificate is issued in the official language of all the signatory countries of the agreement

Negative

Proves that the death of a person is not registered in that Civil Registry.
