If I Live In Spain, Do I Pay For UK National Insurance?

Spain has a lot to offer, including a stunning coastline, mouthwatering cuisine, and amazing markets, which is why many UK citizens decide to live and work there. But should you still pay UK national insurance while living and working in Spain? This blog answers that question.

Continuing to Pay UK NI

Paying the minimum into your UK national insurance pool every month while living or working in Spain means you will be entitled to various benefits and allowances, whether you return to the UK or not.

Voluntary national insurance contributions will help you build up the following benefits:

  • Basic state pension
  • Entitlements and benefits upon returning to the UK
  • Some state advantages under the EEA
  • Bereavement allowances, including the widowed parents allowance, bereavement

While some of these depend on returning to the UK, they are still great to have since you never know what the future brings.

Why Continue Paying UK NI?

Even if you are living in Spain, making voluntary contributions can be a smart move. It ensures you don’t have gaps in your record, which is vital for:

  • The Full State Pension – You currently need 35 qualifying years for the full UK pension.
  • Bereavement Benefits – Protecting your family in the future.
  • Flexibility – Ensuring you are covered if you ever decide to move back to the UK.

You generally now need 10 years of UK residency or previous NI contributions to be eligible to pay voluntarily from Spain. This replaces the old 3-year rule, effectively stopping people who only lived in the UK briefly from buying a British pension.

HM Revenue & Customs explains how to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions while living abroad.

NIC Classes

Depending on your circumstances (employed, self-employed, etc.), you will pay for one of the six NIC classes. The UK Government outlines changes to voluntary National Insurance contributions for periods spent abroad from April 2026, including that only Class 3 contributions will be available for new periods abroad.

These are the two most prevalent NIC classes:

Class 2

Before moving to Spain, you had to fulfil these requirements to be eligible to make class 2 NI payments:

  • Lived and paid NI in the UK for three years.
  • Before moving, were you directly employed or self-employed?
  • Were employed or self-employed right before relocating abroad

Before April 2026, expats working in Spain could pay Class 2 NI for about £3.50 a week.

After April 2026, Class 2 will be abolished for new periods of work abroad. Most expats now only have access to Class 3, which costs roughly £17–£18 a week (over £900 per year)

Class 3

Class 3 contributions are often made when you are not entitled to pay class 2 contributions. They also do not cover all the benefits that class 2 provides. You must have fulfilled these requirements to be eligible to pay for class 3:

  • Before relocating to Spain, you spent years living and paying NI in the UK.
  • Do not qualify for class 2 contributions.
  • Do not have a job in Spain

Class 3 payments may also be paid if you haven’t paid enough class 1 and 2 for that tax year. If you’re planning your long-term financial planning while living in Spain, read UK and Spanish Tax Guide for a broader picture.
