Madrid is home to the Cementerio de Nuestra Señora de la Almudena. Here are some famous people whose resting places are in Madrid.

  • Renowned novelist Benito Pérez Galdós (1843–1920) is considered a Spanish realism maestro. His mausoleum is a modest yet tasteful stone construction.
  • Vicente Aleixandre (1898–1984) was a well-known poet from Spain who belonged to the Generation of 27, a movement recognised for its inventive use of language. A sculpture by modernists marks his tomb.
  • Renowned political figure Dolores Ibárruri (1895–1989) was known by the moniker “La Pasionaria” (The Passionate One). She was a key figure in the Spanish Civil War as a communist leader. For Spanish leftists, her grave is a renowned place of pilgrimage.
  • Loved Spanish singer, actress, and flamenco dancer Lola Flores (1923–1995). Her elaborate tomb, with sculptures of flamenco dancers and a bust, reflects her exuberant personality.
  • Romantic author and journalist Mariano José de Larra (1809–1837) was renowned for his biting societal criticisms. His tomb is marked with a sombre inscription on a plain stone slab.
  • Francisco de Goya (1746–1828): The renowned Spanish painter’s remains were finally transferred to San Justo, despite his original interment being elsewhere. His last resting place is a plain memorial within a temple.

Barcelona

Cementiri de Montjuïc is a picturesque cemetery perched on a hill and is home to several well-known people’s graves and panoramic views of Barcelona. Some famous people buried in Barcelona include:

  • World-famous Catalan artist Joan Miró (1893–1983) was a surrealist. A plain marker marks his interment next to a cypress tree.
  • Renowned opera singer Montserrat Caballé (1933–2018) is regarded as one of the best sopranos of the 20th century. Before being buried in Montjuïc, her funeral service was held at the Sagrada Familia.
