Spain is a wonderful, beautiful country many people enjoy visiting for holidays and short breaks. It is also very popular for people with second homes and those of retirement age.
Here we look at some of the best cities to visit in Spain, spanning different cultures, tastes and trends.
Madrid
Madrid has a wealth of art museums and is therefore very popular with art lovers. However, it also has clear blue skies throughout the seasons and some outstanding architectural landmarks. As the Spanish capital, Madrid offers everything from culture and art to some of the finest bars and restaurants.
Barcelona
If modernist architecture is your thing, Barcelona is a must. It sits across the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees mountains and boasts avant-garde architecture and city beaches. The Sagrada Família, the Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, Placa Reial and Park Güell are all worth visiting and are just a glimpse of Antoni Gaudi’s influence in the city. Barcelona is also rich in history, which is laced through all settings within the city, including restaurants.
San Sebastián
San Sebastian is among the best cities for fine dining and beautiful sandy beaches. Its white sand beaches and crystal clear waters show why this city is known for its sea-loving culture. It is also home to a significant number of Michelin-starred restaurants, more per square meter than anywhere else in Europe, and is the 2nd city in the world with the most Michelin stars – Tokyo being the 1st. The food culture in San Sebastian is everywhere, and you do not need to spend Michelin star prices to enjoy it. All streets are brimming with restaurants and bars.
Toledo
If you are a history lover, Toledo is for you. This 2000-year-old walled city has huge significance in Spanish history. The city has been named ‘The City of Three Cultures’ due to its Islamic, Christian and Jewish influences. With ancient Roman structures, stunning architectural styles and beautiful cobblestone streets, this city is high on the list.
Granada
Granada wins if Western Islamic architecture is your thing. It sits at the bottom of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, making it a scenic dream. Another city rich in history, Granada offers some amazing architectural masterpieces, intricately carved archways and walls and vibrant mosaics.
