After a close friend’s death, it’s normal to feel a variety of emotions, such as loneliness, guilt, rage, sadness, and loss. It is terrible to lose a close friend, especially when many of us have friends who are more like family. There is no one “right” method to grieve; everyone’s grief process will seem different. This blog post offers some guidance on handling a close friend’s death.
Allow Yourself to Experience the Emotions
When you’re mourning, feeling every emotion you experience is crucial, good or terrible. Emotional repression might worsen your symptoms and make coping more difficult. Allowing oneself to cry when necessary is normal and healthy.
Speak With a Reliable Source
You can talk to someone you trust about your feelings and receive support in processing them. This can be a different friend, relative, or licensed counsellor. It is strongly advised that you get professional help from a therapist or grief counsellor if you are experiencing difficulties managing your grief or if it is becoming an impediment to your daily activities. Speak with a loved one or a coworker if you’re feeling down or hopeless, or contact your general practitioner.
Make Self-care a Priority
Your emotional and physical well-being can be enhanced by eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. Look for healthy coping strategies, including hobbies, time with the people you love and trust, or relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation. Steer clear of unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol consumption. Alcohol can exacerbate the grieving process because it is depressive and disrupts your regular sleep schedule.
Write about your emotions and keep a journal of them. This could be a helpful way to grieve and let your feelings be known. Allowing oneself time to go through the grief process is also crucial. There is no time limit to grief.
Remember Them
Pay homage to your friend. This might be a simple booklet with photos and recollections, or it could be artwork. Remember them in a way that holds sentimental value for the two of you because your friendship with them was special. You may just promise to live life to the fullest in their honour or provide your assistance to a project they were passionate about.
Keep in mind that you are not doing this journey alone. Many people are impacted when a close friend passes away, and there are resources available to help you through this difficult time.
