Following on from our previous blog about films that explore grief and loss, here are a few more that could serve as therapeutic and heartwarming.
Steel Magnolias
This film is a comedy-drama about a funny group of female friends. A tragic event shows how important the people close to you are.
50/50
50/50 is a blend of drama and comedy about a young man with possibly terminal cancer. It shows his journey and bond with other cancer patients, exploring life as a terminally ill patient.
Field of Dreams
Losing a parent is tough, no matter the age. Field of Dreams is one of the best films that addresses regrets and unresolved relationships and tells a tale of a father and son reconciling after death.
Inside Out
After a move, the main character (a little girl) attempts to manage her emotions. The movie itself doesn’t deal directly with dying. But it does show that you occasionally have to leave some of your life behind. It’s acceptable to mourn that loss, too.
Brian’s Song
Sometimes we make friends with people whose entire worldview is altered. Brian’s Song is the autobiography of Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, both players for the Chicago Bears. Throughout their careers, the two grew to be unlikely friends. The first mixed-race roommates in NFL history lived together in the 1960s. Their friendship had a greater impact on both of their lives.
Tig
This movie defies convention. The documentary picks up after the legendary comic act at Largo by comedian Tig Notaro. Over the course of a year, she lost her mother, went through a horrific breakup, nearly passed away from an infection, and then received a cancer diagnosis. She still had a lot of grief to process even though she was undergoing cancer treatment. Her inspiring and heartbreaking story is depicted in this movie, which is available on Netflix.
The Five People You Meet In Heaven
Mitch Albom’s memoir ‘Tuesdays With Morrie’ revolutionised books on bereavement. He wrote the book The Five People You Meet in Heaven, which was inspired by the success of his first book. A maintenance man loses his life trying to save a small girl, and after passing away, he is reunited with five people who help him navigate the highs and lows of his own life.
